Richard III Tour

This is mainly for visitors to England, interested in Richard III and wanting to tour some of the locations associated with him. Of course there's nothing to stop UK-based people making use of the information as well, but I have assumed use of public transport.

The information is provided on a good-will basis and you should check it carefully before making any arrangements. I will not be held responsible for any loss or damage, still less for you having to spend the night in a half-demolished bus shelter.

FOTHERINGHAY - Well, he was born here, so it's an obvious place to start. Constance of York and her birth family also lived here, so it may also be of interest to readers of Within the Fetterlock.

There's not much of the castle left, though you can visit the site. The church is awesome. The village pub, The Falcon , is not cheap.

The nearest railway station is Peterborough. There is a scanty local bus service direct to the village from Oundle and Stamford, but you are more likely to have to leg it a couple of miles from the main road. If you have time, do try to call in at the Prebendal Manor House , just down the road at Nassington. Well worth a visit.

LUDLOW - Richard certainly spent some of his childhood here. Extensive remains of the castle , and an interesting town, just about recovered since the Lancastrians wrecked it in 1459. Due to an oversight Ludlow still has a functioning railway station, though it isn't exactly in the town centre. You should also be able to get here by bus without too much grief.

MIDDLEHAM - Well, you all know about Middleham . Anyway, you should go, but the bus service is somewhere between poor and dire, depending on the season. Summer weekends only, you can actually get a through bus - note the singular - from as far off as Wakefield or Leeds. Next we have route 159 , from Ripon to Richmond.Next option is complex but fun - train to Northallerton; connecting bus to Leeming Bar; Wensleydale Railway train to Leyburn, three miles from Middleham - apparently there are at least two buses a day, so you might drop lucky, but walking is more likely.

YORK - Richard had a special attachment to this city, and there's plenty to see. To go there, I recommend the train, as York has excellent railway connections to most parts of the UK. You should have no difficulty. Make a point of visiting Barley Hall , won't you? Oh, and the Minster.

BOSWORTH FIELD - bring stout boots. You are looking at a walk. The most obvious way to get there is by bus from Leicester to Market Bosworth; Leicester has quite a decent train service from various parts of the country. There is another rather infrequent bus from Nuneaton (which has a railway station) to Market Bosworth. Either way it's a good mile, nearer two, to the Battlefield Centre. An alternative might be to change from the Nuneaton bus at Shakerstone onto the Battlefield Line railway - however, the times will need careful planning.
