Here's a link to a Ricardian tour of the town of Barnard Castle
Sheriff Hutton Castle is well worth a visit but you need to make arrangements with the owner. Enquire locally in advance. Also visit the church .
Some other places you might like to visit:-
In London, the Tower and Westminster Abbey are open to the public if you don't mind their egrigrious admission prices. Crosby Hall , Richard's former London house, is privately owned and NOT open to the public. For "security reasons" admission to Westminster Hall is not usually possible. You can however see Richard's portrait in the National Portrait Gallery .
Cardiff Castle is another place linked with both Richard and Constance, although I doubt either of them would recognise it. They both held the magnificent Caerphilly Castle also, just down the road from Cardiff. Well worth a visit, it's the king of castles.
St George's Chapel Windsor - Has tombs of Edward IV, Henry VI and Will Hastings. Also, check out the Garter stall plates.
Mowbray Family - Framlingham Castle
De la Pole (Suffolk) family -
Wingfield Church
(Don't try to visit the
castle
, as it's a strictly private family residence.) Also,
Ewelme Church
(pronounced You-Elm Church)
Stanley family:
Ormskirk Church
and
Lathom House
.
Note - the medieval house (more of castle really) was destroyed in the Civil War. A late 15th century chapel remains.
Vaughan family (Welsh supporters of King Richard). Tretower Court is a lovely place and well worth a visit by anyone remotely interested in the Middle Ages. I was delighted to have an excuse to include it as a location in The Adventures of Alianore Audley.
Neville/Beauchamp (Warwick) family. Warwick Castle . A good antidote to such blatant commercialism is the local church . Home to England's tastiest non-royal tomb - bar none! While many of you will recall Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick as a character in Within the Fetterlock, you may not realise that he later married Constance's daughter, Isabelle, and by her was the grandfather of Richard III's Queen Anne Neville.
Woodville Family -
Grafton Regis
. A nice site - let's not be biased!
Here's Anthony's former home,
Middleton Towers
: Again, this is a strictly private home with no public access, but you can look at it from the public road as long as you don't stare.
Lovell Family - Minster Lovell . Beautiful location and not to be missed.
Almost forgot - Tewkesbury Abbey, where the Lancastrians sheltered after the battle only to be dragged out by Edward IV. Also full of interesting tombs, notably the Despenser ones.
